Looking forward to Spring more than ever before
Looking forward to Spring more than ever before
Written by Lisa Cadman, 24/02/2021
So not long now until we have warmer, longer days and all the flowers will come out to cheer us up! In just over a months time, under the Prime Ministers new rules, we will (everything crossed!) be able to see a few family members and/or friends in our gardens and share a cuppa, or a glass of something stronger (!) and have a much-needed catch up with those we care about...x

I think we are probably more ready for Spring than we ever have been before. This latest lockdown over winter has been the hardest yet. So I thought I would do another Essential Oil piece this month, but concentrating on the Floral and Citrus Essential Oils that are both light and uplifting – those that brighten our spirits and lift our hearts. Most of us have had to be super-resilient over the last year and we deserve a lift! What better way than with these beautiful Spring-time Aromas, and mixing a few of the ones below together, we can create a wonderful uplifting Aromatherapy Blend to cheer our days!
You can make an Essential Oil Blend up yourself, using (for healthy adults) a maximum of 12 drops total of Essential Oil per 30ml of Base/Carrier Oil (I use Sweet Almond Oil). You can then apply this blend to your pulse points on your wrists and your temples, or use it for a full body massage, or in a lovely hot bath as preferred. Obviously I can also supply any blends that you would like. Please note: at the end of each of the Essential Oil descriptions below, I have listed any Safety Data to be aware of.
If you are blending for a child or anyone with hypersensitivies/hyperallergies, or certain medical conditions, you should reduce the dose, and always contact myself or another qualified Aromatherapist for more advice, prior to application.
Some wonderful FLORAL Essential Oils with ‘Uplifting’ properties are:
Geranium (Pelargonium Graveolens)
Geranium Essential Oil is a fantastic oil. It is an adaptogenic, which means it has the ability to relax or stimulate as
required. It is balancing and calming, and is wonderful used for chronic anxiety. It is hormone balancing and a
wonderful general tonic. It is generally non-toxic and a non-irritant, but some care should be taken for use on those
that have hypersensitive skin or multiple allergies.

Jasmine (Jasminum Officinale)
Jasmine Essential Oil is a beautiful, emotionally warming and reassuring oil. It is also highly regarded as an
aphrodisiac! It works in tune with the female reproductive system, and is wonderfully relaxing. It is great for states
of panic and anxiety. It is generally non-toxic and a non-irritant, but some care should be taken for use on those that
have hypersensitive skin or multiple allergies. As it is also a uterine tonic, it should not be used in pregnancy until
labour.
Lavender (Lavandula Angustifolia)
Lavender Essential Oil is under-valued in my opinion! It is truly an incredible oil, being an adaptogenic (like
Geranium), it can relax or stimulate depending what you mix it with. It is a wonderful balancer, and one of the absolute
best oils for all stress-related conditions. It is healing, soothing and sedative, but it can also uplift us out of a
rut, and help us to adapt to new situations. Being non-toxic, non-irritant and non-sensitising, it is also one of the
safest oils used in Aromatherapy, and it suitable for just about everyone, young and old alike.

Neroli (Citrus Aurantium Var. Amara Flos)
Neroli Essential Oil is simply beautiful, and one of my absolute favourites. It is a classic stress remedy and is
calming and relaxing, dealing well with states of anxiety, fear and worry. It can help before tests or exams, and in
cases of depression and apathy. It is a euphoric oil, reduces obsessive thought and is also wonderful for the skin. It
is non-toxic, non-irritant and non-sensitising, so is generally safe for everyone. The heady floral aroma may cause
headaches though, in those with hypersensitivity, so it should be used with caution for those individuals.
Rose (Rosa Damascena or Rosa Centifolia)
Rose Essential Oil is one of the purest and most beautiful of all the Essential Oils. It is a wonderful skin care oil,
and is hormone balancing (brilliant for period problems, mood swings and hormone imbalances) and it is also wonderful
for helping with feelings of grief or disappointment. It is a restorative and comforting oil. It is generally non-toxic
and non-irritant, but it has a caution in pregnancy, due to it also being a uterine tonic.

Ylang Ylang (Cananga Odorata Var. Genuina)
Ylang Ylang Essential Oil is a brilliant skin tonic. It is also recommended for those experiencing loss of confidence or
those struggling with anxiety and fear. Like Jasmine, it is also believed to be a strong aphroadisiac. It helps to calm
and relax us, and it’s soporific and sedative properties can help us with sleep issues. It is generally non-toxic and
non-irritant, but it may cause headaches in those with hypersensitivities.
Some wonderful CITRUS Essential Oils with ‘Uplifting’ properties are:
Bergamot (Citrus Aurantium Subspecies Bergamia)
Bergamot Essential Oil is one of my favourite Citrus oils. It is fantastic for getting rid of emotional tension and
feelings of frustration and irritability, and wonderful in times of stress, worry and anxiety. It soothes the nervous
system with it’s light fragrance, and is also a good lymphatic decongestant and digestive tonic. There is an important
safety note for this oil though – you should always use a Bergamot FCF Essential Oil – this means it is free of
Bergapten, which can be phototoxic.

Grapefruit (Citrus Paradisii)
Grapefruit Essential Oil is a wonderful aerial antiseptic, and is also a great lymphatic and digestive tonic. It is
uplifting and cleansing, cooling and decongesting. It is wonderful for lifting feelings of sadness and for use with
depression and anxiety, and for dealing with negative thoughts. It is generally non-toxic, non-sensitising and
non-irritant, so is safe for the vast majority of people.
Lemon (Citrus Limonum)
Lemon Essential Oil is cleansing, toning and uplifting. Like Grapefruit, it is also an airborne antiseptic, which is
very useful for us at the moment. It is a bactericidal, antiviral and decongesting immunostimulant, as well as being
fungicidal and a great lymphatic and digestive tonic. It can uplift the mind, and is safe for just about everyone. The
only safety data with this oil is that is can be slightly phototoxic, so please avoid strong sun exposure after
application.

Mandarin (Citrus Reticulata)
Mandarin Essential Oil is a really lovely, gentle tonic. Uplifting and refreshing, it is a wonderful anti-depressant,
and like Lemon, a great lymphatic and digestive tonic. It uplifts the mind and makes us feel more positive. Non-toxic,
non-irritant and non-sensitising, it is safe for just about everyone. Wonderful for pregnancy and post-birth and also is
safe for little ones and the elderly alike (and everyone in between!).
Sweet Orange (Citrus Sinensis)
Sweet Orange Essential Oil is one of my absolute favourites. It is a wonderful nerve tonic, so fabulous at dealing with
anxiety (being relaxing and calming), whilst also being an uplifting, refreshing Essential Oil like all the other Citrus
Essential Oils. It is great for those who are exhausted and full of worry, as well as for those feeling stressed,
irritated or frustrated with life. Non-toxic, non-irritant and non-sensitising, so again safe for just about everyone. A
brilliant Essential Oil for us all right now.
