Be Kind to your Gut!

Written by Lisa Cadman, 20/05/2022

I’ve been looking through my past blogs, and thought it was time to do another Essential Oil feature – so I thought this month I would share some oils with you, to help support your Digestive System.

There is a strong link between our Nervous System and our Digestive System, so in times of stress, our guts can also suffer. Some of my recent clients have noticed that they have extra bloating or uncomfortable stomach aches, when they are going through troubles in their lives, so I thought this would be a good one to cover this month.

Having put on quite a bit of weight myself during the various lockdowns, I have been eating much more healthily in recent months, and also doing more exercise. I’ve lost a stone and a half – it’s a start! Eating a wide variety of foods, with all the necessary fibre, fats, carbohydrates, proteins, vitamins and minerals is the very best way to support your Digestive System (along with drinking plenty of water), but there are many Essential Oils too, that work to support this body system – below are just a few! Please do check the safety data in each section, to make sure each oil is safe for you to use.

Black Pepper (Piper Nigrum)
This Essential Oil works well in supporting our Digestive System, as it helps with diarrhoea, constipation, IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome) and sluggish digestion. It’s also great for osteoarthritis, rheumatism, sciatica, and general muscular aches, pains and fatigue. It is analgesic, strengthening, and rubefacient (brings warmth), so is lovely used in a blend and massaged onto the tummy. It is very stimulating, so not recommended for bedtime, and should only be used in low-medium doses (it can be a skin irritant in high doses for those with hypersensitivity), but it is wonderful added to a warm bath, or in a massage or sports blend, with other oils added. Please note: This oil is too strong for use on babies or young children.

Chamomile, Roman (Chamaemelum Nobile)
This oil is great for our Digestive System too, as it is good for colic, indigestion, flatulence, nausea and IBS. It is also a soothing, calming, classic stress remedy, and is great for dealing with headaches, migraines, insomnia, irritability, anxiety, depression, agitation and emotional stress. It is also safe for everyone, including babies, as it is one of the safest oils used in Aromatherapy.

Ginger (Zingiber Officinalis)
This oil is a warming, energising oil. It is great for our Digestive System as it is good for helping with constipation, diarrhoea, indigestion, nausea, IBS, morning sickness, colic, flatulence and travel sickness. It also helps us with all muscular aches, pains and fatigue, as well as rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis, joint stiffness and muscle tension. It is analgesic and anti-inflammatory, and it is very stimulating. Fabulous used in a warm bath after a busy day, but perhaps not just before bed. Please note: It also should not be used on babies or children, as it is much too stimulating, and neither should it be used on individuals with hypersensitivity.

Grapefruit (Citrus Paradisii)
Grapefruit Essential Oil is wonderful for our Digestive System, as it is a fabulous tonic for the liver and gallbladder, and helps with abdominal bloating, constipation, indigestion and obesity. It is cleansing, uplifting and revitalising, and has a cooling, refreshing effect on the body. It is decongesting, as well as helping to clear the mind. It is an astringent aerial antiseptic, is bactericidal, diuretic and a lymphatic tonic. Please note: Generally safe for everyone, but as with most Citrus oils, it is not recommended to have strong sun exposure following application.

Lemon (Citrus Limonum)
This Essential Oil has almost all the same properties as Grapefruit, so is also a fantastic tonic for the liver and gallbladder, and is a cleansing, toning, uplifting and refreshing oil to add to your blend. It is wonderful for bloating and lymphatic congestion, and can be helpful with gallstones, constipation, indigestion and IBS. Please note: As with all Citrus oils, sun exposure should be avoided after use.

Peppermint (Mentha Piperita)
Peppermint Essential Oil is great for the Digestive System as it helps with colic, cramps, flatulence, nausea and IBS. It is refreshing and cooling, mainly due to its high menthol content. It is highly invigorating and stimulating, and also good for our Lymphatic System. Please note: Peppermint has some important safety data to bear in mind – it is not safe at all for use around or on babies or children under 7, and should also be avoided with anyone with heart problems, those taking homeopathic remedies, those with sensitive skins, or those who are pregnant.

Sweet Orange (Citrus Sinensis)
Sweet Orange Essential Oil is one of my absolute favourites. It is wonderful for the Digestive System, being great for diarrhoea, constipation, IBS and for those that feel generally sluggish (especially after eating). It is also a great nerve tonic, so fabulous at dealing with stress and anxiety, whilst also being an uplifting, refreshing Essential Oil. Non-toxic, non-irritant and non-sensitising, so again safe for just about everyone.

A beautiful Essential Oil Blend of these, for a healthy adult that I would recommend, would be 30ml of whatever Base/Carrier oil is your preference – I use Sweet Almond – then the following drops of Essential Oils: Sweet Orange (4 drops), Roman Chamomile (3 drops), Ginger (3 drops) and Black Pepper (2 drops). Or if you can’t use them all, or would like to use different ones, then use a combination (up to a total of 12 drops) per 30ml of Base oil.

If you would like to discuss any ways in which my treatments or products might be able to help you, please do not hesitate to contact me on: 07710 173354 or email me at: lisa@soulspace.biz. I would really love to hear from you.

With all my love and hugs. See you next month!
